5 key Early Period Historical Clarinet in D (A=440hz and A=430hz). This Clarinet represents the first stage of development of true clarinets and is a reimagining of a George Miller clarinet from 1770, the original of which is with the Bate Collection of Oxford University. Pitched in A=430 and the modern tuning of A=440. George Miller was an English woodwind instrument maker who established a workshop on Wych Street, London c 1765 - 1790.
The distinguishing features of the clarinet (as opposed to the chalumeau) were the flaring bore and register key. Situated on the back of the instrument, this key allows the clarinet to change registers, which had not been possible on the chalumeau.
Jacob Denner of Nuremberg is credited with the addition of this key and thus the single most important innovation in clarinet history The Classical clarinet can be used to play music composed by Mozart, Beethoven, the Stamitz family and other composers of the 18th Century.
