Buffet R13 Bb Clarinet #184370. Buffet R13 Clarinet #184370 was manufactured in France in 1978.

It has been completely refurbished in our shop in southern CT. Here's what we did. The instrument was completely disassembled.

All keys were removed and swedged (tightened) when needed for better fit. All rods and screws were cleaned.

All springs were removed and replaced if needed. All corks were removed from the keys and tenons. The grenadilla wood body was inspected for cracks.

This clarinet had suffered a crack on the upper joint at some time prior to arriving at our shop. The crack was professionally repaired by a competent tech, with 3 pins securing the crack so it can never re-open. The filled entry points for the pins are shown in one of the photos. Once the overhaul was finished we performed a suction test on each joint to make sure there were no leaks of any type.

The upper joint was tight as can be. The grenadilla wood body was washed, dried and oiled. First we wash it down with warm, soapy water to remove any grit and grime. Next we dry it inside and out.

Then we saturate the wood with bore oil and let it sit for several days. The oil gets absorbed up into the wood so that the bore will shed moisture from playing, rather than absorb it, which will damage the instrument. They keys are cleaned and polished. Technically, nickle silver doesn't tarnish. It builds up a hard, dull patina which cannot be wiped off easily.

So we bring the keys into our buffing room and polish them with a special "rouge" on a high speed buffing wheel. It's a messy job but it works.

After washing the buffing dirt off and drying, the keys look brand new! We apply new corks to the tenons and keys. Tenons are the part of the clarinet that are pushed into receivers, allowing the parts to fit together snugly. We glue these corks (and all the key corks as well) with contact cement.

The same stuff they use to glue down formica counter tops. Once it's glued down, it stays down.

Tenon corks are beveled on their edges so the won't tear being pushed into or pulled out of the receivers. Pads are installed into the key cups. We have switched all our high-end clarinet overhauls over to synthetic pads.

Specifically, to Valentino Tan Master pads from J. These pads seal better than anything I have ever seen in over 45 years as a woodwind tech. And they last far longer than traditional bladder pads or even cork pads.

We stock many sizes so we get the exact fit we need for a particular key or situation. One key at a time, we re-assemble the clarinet.

Seating each pad as we go. "Seating" a pad means making sure it covers the tone-hole all the way around, at exactly the same time, with exactly the same amount of pressure. This requires great patience, and a willingness to re-check the seating after the pad has settled. If you look at your clarinet you will see that when pressing certain keys, more than one pad closes.

Regulation is where we make sure that the pads come down at exactly the same time. If they don't, one of them will be covering, the other will be leaking.

Even though technically the work is perfect, certain flaws will show themselves when we play test the instrument. Often it has to do with spring tensions. The air pressure when playing can blow open some keys just enough to cause a problem.

We add tension just a little bit at a time until we hit the "sweet spot" where the pad stays seated and the key doesn't feel overly stiff. All of these steps were performed on this clarinet. The original case was functional, but funky. So we put the clarinet in a brand new Protec Slimline Pro Pac case. Great protection, lightweight, lots of storage.

Remember, your offer is a binding contract. We are happy to answer them if we can.
