These English made clarinets have exceptional tuning and are easily on par with the Buffet Crampon B12 & the comparable Yamaha 250 & Yamaha 255 models. In fact, having test played it and putting it through it's paces, I would say, that it's probably better.

Easy and free playing, extremely comfortable in the hands, a decent mouthpiece and the advantage of a decent leather ligature set. This will make the difference between a pass in an exam, and a good pass! Barely played, but nevertheless fully checked over and correctly adjusted and set up, this clarinet will feel like having a new instrument. True, teachers recommend Yamaha or Buffet, but this is purely because it's what they know.

Let's face it, most teachers can teach, but very few know one end of the clarinet from the other, or otherwise they would be sourcing the clarinet and servicing it for you instead of leaving that responsibility to you. I gladly assume that responsibility. They often arrive in a disgusting barely playable (if at all) condition, and require a full service or worse still, an overhaul. You won't necessarily know this straight away unless your kid is pretty savvy and fairly advanced. Zoom in on the chimneys: the 3 big holes in each main joint. You'll see grime build more often than not. Why then would you want your child to shove the thing in their mouths! If you want a decent resin student clarinet, this Howarth model is amongst the best available. Lightweight & robost, it can take a knock and keep on playing.

Even the case is better than those supplied with the Buffet or Yamaha equivalents with plenty of space for accessories. If this clarinet doesn't live up to all expectations, then return it.

I wizzed through a load of Weber Grade 8 stuff on it recently and I began to wonder why people shell out thousands of pounds on wooden clarinets in the first place, when clarinets like this, play so nicely. But that's a different debate altogether.

This clarinet could very easily get you through your Grade 8 at minimal cost, and without the worries associated with owning a wooden instrument. I particularly like the slightly enlarged fixed thumb rest that's more comfortable than any other thumb rest I've ever encountered. You can literally play for hours without your right thumb hurting. Again, another beautiful feature on this clarinet. If you can get over the snobbery associated with owning an over priced Buffet or Yamaha instrument, then this clarinet is for you.
