Chalumeau in F Soprano Historical Reproduction Chalumeaux of Stuehnwal A-440

Chalumeau in F (Fa) Soprano. This Chalumeau is the reproduction of an original by Stuehnwal from 1730 (Bayerische National Museum in Munich), cited in many older books as "the first clarinet", before we became more conscious of the chalumeau as a distinct instrument. It only plays in the fundamental harmonic range, which is the lower register of the clarinet; this is why players refer to the lower register of the clarinet as the chalumeau register.

As it only plays in the fundamental range, it has a strangely low sound, limited range of notes with quite a different sound range. For that reason, early composers like Vivaldi, Telemann, Graupner, Molter and Bononcini have written music for it.

This model is pitched in F (the lowest note, though according to clarinet terminology, which goes by the second register, it would be C), at 440hz, with a slight change in the original design of the mouthpiece which is hand crafted in wood. Indian Cocobolo wood (friendly wood to extreme weather conditions) is used with 2 brass keys.

The Chalumeau doesnt play in the upper Clarion register, so the speaker/register key is only to play throat notes to play A and Bb, by holding them together, you get B natural. Information: After Chalumeau, in 1690, a German Johann Christopher Denner converted one of the existing keys to make it the speaker / register key, which allowed players to produce notes a 12th higher in pitch than normal. This increased the instruments range hugely. The clarinet produced a loud, shrill sound, which resulted in the name being derived from the Italian word clarion which means straight trumpet hence the upper register is known as the Clarion register. Also Available: Clarinets in A (La) key, B flat (Sib) key, Eb (Mib) key, C (Do) Key.
